Nervous System

The nervous system is made up of cells called neurons which transmit chemical or electrical signals throughout the body. The major organs of the nervous system are the brain, spinal cord, and the retina, which make up the central nervous system (CNS) and the sensory neurons, ganglia and the large network of nerve cells, which are spread throughout the body and make up the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

The nervous system is commonly referred to as the control center of the body and includes the following functions:

  • Skeletal muscle movement
  • Movement of food through the digestive system
  • Sensing of hot, cold, pain, pressure
  • Taste

There are many diseases and conditions that can affect the nervous system, including:

  • Alzheimer Disease
  • Parkinson Disease
  • Huntington Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Brain or Spinal Tumors
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
