Flow Cytometry is a laboratory technique used to diagnose various types of leukemias and lymphomas, as well as to manage treatment and monitor for changes in therapy and potential relapse. Flow Cytometry is one of a battery of techniques and tests used, which also include light microscopy, histochemical stains and immunophenotyping.
Results for each leukemia and/or lymphoma panel are incorporated into an interpretative report generated for each specimen analyzed. Results of flow cytometry analysis are usually correlated with morphology (physical appearance) of the specimen. Following consultation with the referring physician, additional markers may be included for difficult and unusual cases if necessary.Flow cytometry ("flow") can also be used for non-neoplastic applications. These include assessing the presence and quantity of fetal red blood cells in the maternal circulation, enumerating T4 and T8 lymphocytes in HIV patients, quantifying CD55 and CD59 to evaluate for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, quantifying DNA content to assess for a neoplastic cell population, assessing for antibody bound to red blood cells, neutrophils and platelets and blood tying in the blood bank for previously transfused patients.
Flow cytometry can be performed on a blood sample, bone marrow, lymph node biopsy, or other tissue biopsy samples or bodily fluids.
